Thanks Graham

I love this list serve!

There are themes of self-sufficiency in the northern US and Canada where
people have learned to work together and income and education are
distributed at more equitable levels.

Sometimes it takes some element of sacrifice as noted in Rick Edward's
post.

The mental image of SWAT forces busting in on hydroponic vegetables still
keeps me laughing.

Reviewing Heckman's work now at
http://www.ced.org/docs/report/report_2006prek_heckman.pdf

and Hart and Risely at

Sadly my inner city teaching contacts reveal that Omaha will be far short
of universal preschool and the much needed early development.

Not a teacher I have contacted yet did not wish that they had the students
sooner and longer for better long term outcomes.

Prediction 2: Universal Preschool
Parents and the public in the United States want universal preschool for
three- and four year-old children. The feeling of the general public is
that earlier is better, and this sentiment is supported by research. “The
first three years may be the most important chiefly because changing what
has been learned from past experience is so difficult and time-consuming,”
(Hart and Risely, 1995). Prekindergarten is also viewed as one means of
closing the achievement gap.
“Just to provide an average low socioeconomic child with an amount of
weekly language experience equal to that of an average middle-class child
would require 41 hours per week of out-of-home experience,” (Hart and
Risely, 1995). Low-income parents know that for their children to be
successful in life, they must first be successful in school.

Prediction 10: Development of Innovative Efforts to Solve Teacher Shortages
Teacher shortages are a major concern in the U.S. As populations increase
and other demographic changes occur, other nations will experience teacher
shortages. It is predicted that the U.S. will need 2.5 million new teachers
by 2010. The teacher shortages are challenging traditional views of what
makes a good teacher and how to educate teachers. More teacher education is
moving from colleges and universities to other sources. Some shortage
initiatives include alternative certification programs, for-profit teacher
certification programs, an increase in public schools’ certification of
teachers, and providing subsidized housing and other benefits to attract
teachers.

Sadly those who could have become teachers in the most needed areas, did
not graduate from high school or college because they were far behind by
age 5. Also teachers, like public servants and other service oriented
professionals, cannot afford to live in the most costly areas of the nation
on the lowest salaries and with the highest costs of living. It would take
more than lotteries involving a few condominiums or subsidized housing or
enhanced benefits to overcome these disadvantages.

The connections between various societal functions continue to become more
complex, and more simple.
