There was an interesting study completed in the United States around
1980. One of the labor unions surveyed top management in large US
corporations about their perceptions of the causes of work related
stress and possible solutions. They generally defined work stress as due
to poor time management skills, inability of workers to manage the
workpace, etc. Of course the solution was to provide employees with
training in time management and relaxation skills.

They also surveyed union leaders. Union leaders generally defined the
problem as poor control over the workplace, excessive job demands, etc.
Their solution was greater employee control over job definitions and job
work pace.

This is similar to the US definitions of workplace stress compared to
the Europeans, particularly the Scandanavians.

Folks,
Why don't we say it like it is? Work related stress is due to poor
working conditions, no support from employers, expectations to produce,
produce, produce, whether you believe in what you are doing or not,
selling products which are bad for people's health.... producing more
cars that are not environmentally friendly,.... producing more cars
period...doing work that is not positive for society, doing all kinds of
things which are ultimately useless for the betterment of our world.....
The great North American way of life......going on and on and on while
many people are suffering and we are doing little to really improve the
world we live in. That is what is stressful, not working......... It's
doing useless work... And that is my humble opinion on the subject.
