Dear Colleagues:

Below is an action alert that we sent to members of the Registered
Nurses' Association of Ontario asking them to send an electronic message
to the provincial government to get moving on the poverty file. You are
welcome to send it around as you see fit as it is an easy way for people
to respond to the Premier and Minister Matthews either by using the RNAO
template, changing the text of the letter to fit the person writing,
and/or using the links to send a message from the 25 in 5 website.

Thanks very much, Lynn Anne

Subject: RNAO Action Alert - Urge Premier to Act Now on a Poverty
Reduction Strategy for Ontario

Action Alert
Urge Premier to Act Now on a Poverty Reduction Strategy for Ontario
April 15, 2008

Background

The burden of ill health and early death associated with poverty is
undeniable. As nurses, we witness the devastating effects of poverty in
our day to day work.

In his November 2007 throne speech, Premier McGuinty committed to
striking a cabinet committee on poverty reduction, which is composed of
fifteen MPPs from across the province and with varying portfolios. This
committee, led by Minister Deb Matthews, will work to develop poverty
indicators and targets, and a strategy for reducing poverty in Ontario.

Nurses know the impact poverty can have on people's health. That's why
RNAO has joined with many other organizations to form the 25 in 5
Network for Poverty Reduction, which is calling on the government to
adopt the "25-in-5" strategy as an essential step to improve thousands
of lives.

Action Requested

Urge Premier McGuinty and the Cabinet Committee on Poverty Reduction to
act now on a comprehensive poverty reduction strategy for Ontario. Visit
http://www.rnao.org/Page.asp?PageID=122&ContentID=2365&SiteNodeID=398&BL
_ExpandID= to send a letter directly from our website. You can send our
sample letter as is, or modify it as you wish. Please make sure to sign
your name and RN title at the bottom of the letter.

We also encourage all members to invite their family, friends,
colleagues, and neighbours to send a message either through the RNAO
website or through the 25 in 5 Network for Poverty Reduction website at
http://www.socialplanningtoronto.org/25in5/25_in_5.htm
