VICTORIA - The British Columbia government plans to encourage its population
to get fit, quit smoking and eat more vegetables - all initiatives included
in Tuesday's pre-election speech from the throne.

'Great goals for a golden decade,' is what the provincial Liberals call the
initiatives. It says it wants to make B.C. the fittest, best educated place
in North America, with the best supports for seniors, world class
environmental management and more new jobs per capita than any place in Canada.

The promises start with one for students: three years after the government
lifted the freeze on tuition fees, it says there will no more double digit
increases.

"Your government will act to limit tuition fee increases to the rate of
inflation, starting this September," said Lt.-Gov. Iona Campagnolo. On the
fitness issue, the government says it's going to launch an initiative called
Act Now to encourage British Columbians to exercise more, lose weight, quit
smoking and have a healthy diet.

As an example, the Liberals say they want "to increase by 20 per cent the
number of British Columbians who eat the recommended daily level of fruit
and vegetables."
