The Globe and Mail is dead-on in it analysis of how the Ontario drop-out
law further disadvantages the most disadvantaged of society. Add to the
analysis that Mr. Kennedy's government has refused to make available the
Federal Child Benefit to families on social assistance, has made meagre
increases to the minimum wage, and has taken little advantage of federal
monies to provide affordable housing. Is it an wonder that 16 year olds
jump at the chance to bring some monies into their households? As least in
the poverty-stricken developing world, poor children have the option of
working to avoid hunger and misery. In Ontario we compound the misery by
making working illegal for those who need to do so to survive.
