Well in my very jaded opinion, as someone in poverty and having been a
doctoral student, conferencing is big business, isn't it? Moreover, a good
deal of its purpose appears to be less about social, rather than personal
advancement, on adding another line to one's CV.

I'd love to see more of affected populations included in conferences,
seminars, or whatever. But hob-nobbing with one's elite peers will be a
tough habit for many in power to break.
