I would take it as a compliment.

Subject: [SDOH] Red- baiting in Toronto's health science world

Dear All:

I thought that some of you might be interested in the following.

I was invited to give a presentation on the topic of my choice to some
colleagues in a local academic health science centre. I chose to speak about
poverty and the health of women and children. I gave a presentation, using
sources that are obtainable from such groups as the World Health
Organization,
Health Canada, Statistics Canada and from the academic literature. When
discussing such things as the growing income gap and the inablility of
people
working at minimum wage to get out of poverty, I said that I thought that
this
was not the Canada that most Canadians want (the fact that Canadians say
they
want good health and education can be verified through many public opinion
polls).

At the end of this lecture, a few usual questions were asked. Then a member
of
the audience said "you sound like a Communist." Oh, why do words fail at
such
time? Not once during my lecture had I mentioned state ownership and control
of the means to production. Not once had I mentioned the "lumpen
proletariat."
The questioner said I had a right to my opinions BUT....

Of course, I wish I had quoted Niemoller and said "First they came for the
Jews..then they came for the Communists.." but, as I said, words fail.

Well, at least we still have a lot of work to do in the academy!
