My reading of the accumulated literature finds the content of Andre
Picard's report on the determinants of dementia and heart disease to be
correct: education levels and socioeconomic status -- i.e., living
conditions -- are the best predictors of the incidence of these
afflictions. Why then is the headline and recommendations so focused on
jogging and exercising, factors found to add minimal predictability to the
incidence of these diseases? I know the Globe and Mail is a pro-capitalist,
pro-individualist newspaper. Does this ideological lens have to distort
its health reporting?
