Hello all,
As part of the Sudbury & District Health Unit’s approach to addressing the
social and economic determinants of health, we’re embarking on a community
strategy to reduce health inequities among SDHU area residents. We’re
sensitive to the fact that there is some community awareness raising that
needs to take place related to poverty myths, the deserving vs.
undeserving poor, individual vs. community responsibility for poverty (and
it’s solutions), etc…
Taking a social marketing approach, we’re interested in doing some
community research to investigate community values/beliefs/attitudes
regarding poverty, its relationship to health, and some of the potential
ideological barriers that we might encounter as we advance a SDOH
framework locally.
We are looking for examples of other research that has explored these
issues and more specifically, survey/interview questions that have been
used to assess social values/beliefs/attitudes. In essence we are
interested in exploring the following themes:
1) community values re: the deserving vs. undeserving poor (including “who
is to blame for poverty” – individual shortcomings vs. societal
policies/structures)
2) the perceived impact of poverty on those who are NOT living in poverty
(how does it affect me?)
3) the connection between poverty and health
4) the role of individuals/communities in reducing poverty and/or
alleviating the impact of poverty
Any examples/guidance/leads would be very much appreciated and can be sent
to me directly at the address below.
Thanks in advance,
