I think other social determinants besides traditional diet are likely the
cause of life expectancy differences between the first and third worlds.

Diet -- other than in terms of malnutrition and undernourishment -- matters
most later in life because of chronic diseases.

In "high mortality developing countries", the WHO ranks of
disability-adjusted life years lost (DALYs). First on the list is
underweight, second: sexually transmitted infections (read HIV), third:
unsafe water/sanitation/hygiene. All three of these have roots in the
social determinants of health.

With so many years of life lost to these economically and
health-system-based problems, it is little wonder we don't see long-term,
diet-related chronic diseases among the few places that are able to continue
to enjoy food sovereignty.

There are lots of healthy traditional foods/diets that are more nutritious
than much of the over-processed food product we see in stores in the U.S.
Quinoa, long-time staple grain of the Andes, offers much more than the
grains we find in "squishy" white bread. There are countless examples.

Traditional diets in third world countries tend to be healthy, but are
increasingly being replaced by imported, commodity-based processed foods. I
would argue that the increasing prevalence of type-II diabetes abroad is
related.
