"My name is Brian Davidson and I am the Wightman-Berris Academy Course
Coordinator for the second year University of Toronto, Faculty of
Medicine course Determinants of Community Health (DOCH2) called 'Researching
Health in the Community' and I am working to recruit project supervisors.

Do you have a small scale, community-based research project that needs pilot
data or the input of a talented and hardworking research assistant who works
for free to get it through the ethics approval process, data collection
and report generation?

In the DOCH2 course, a large group of highly motivated and eager 2nd
year medical students complete a research project to address health problems
and determinants of health affecting specific population groups. In the
process, students learn about (1) the inter-relationship of a health issue and
a social determinant of health, and (2) how to work with agencies and
supervisors. Traditionally, the reports produced by the students are very
valuable to their supervisors.

PROJECT TYPES
Projects are developed as one of four main types:
* Needs Assessment: assessment of the health needs of a community
* Barrier Assessment: assessment of a barrier to health in the community
* Instrument/Resource Development: development of a new resource (survey,
patient pamphlet, etc.) using sound evidence and evaluation plan
* Evaluation: evaluation of an existing program or resource

BENEFITS TO THE SUPERVISOR
* an opportunity to get new ideas flowing
* a chance to get a new project off the ground
* a chance to continue an existing project
* a positive role in student development

RESPONSIBILITY OF AN AGENCY SUPERVISOR
The role of the project supervisor is to provide the overall
coordination and guidance of the student's placement. As part of this role, the
supervisor will also be involved in the direct evaluation of student
participation as well as providing input to the academy coordinator on the
evaluation of student's Individual Learning Plan, major project paper and
presentation.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Brian"
