The Gatekeeper: 60 Years of Economics According to The New York Times,
by Robert Chernomas and Ian Hudson

Dear All:

This new book unpacks the New York Times's economic coverage and its
direct and indirect implications for health and social inequality.

For 60 years the /Times/consistently favored rules that enhanced the
profitability of
American business. Eschewing conservative and liberal dogmatism, the
/Times/preferred
economic policies that often came at the expense of the U.S. general
public. The
resulting inequality contributed to the fact that the US has among the
worst health
indicators in the industrialized world which the Times in turn laments.

The Gatekeeper:
60 Years of Economics According to The New York Times

Robert Chernomas and Ian Hudson

The New York Times can make a legitimate claim to be the most
influential newspaper in the U.S. and possibly the world. Because
of its influence, the Times has become a central figure in the debate
over the direction of bias in the media, with some claiming that
it is left wing or liberal and others arguing that it is right wing or
conservative. But the liberal-conservation media debate is very
misleading. The Gatekeeper argues that the Times can more accurately
be characterized as supporting long run profitability for U.S.
business, which involves both liberal and conservative policies in
different contexts. Through a thorough examination of the Times?
star commentators and its coverage of the issues of macroeconomics,
regulation, foreign policy, and the 2008?2009 economic crisis,
The Gatekeeper refocuses the debate about the bias of the most
venerable institution in U.S. journalism.

Manitoba. He is internationally renowned for his research in the

member of the Council of Canadians and is on the Board
of International Journal of Health Services.

Ian Hudson is Associate Professor of Economics at the University of
Manitoba. In his

professional sports. More recently, he has published several articles in
the area of ethical consumption. He is a research associate for the
Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, where he has published
several works on the danger of tax cuts and reductions in public
spending. He is on the steering committees of Fair Trade
