This makes me so crazy!!!! Thanks for the heads up, Dennis!
This is my comment to the editor of the Globe and Mail this morning... I'm all fired up again!
While I recognize the important work that is being done in many areas related to healthy lifestyle choices (such as tobacco use, healthy eating and physical activity - and more dubiously, around suntanning parlors) all across the country and around the world, Public Health reporter Andre Picard is missing the boat on upstream and root causes of health and wellness.
Why on the day when the Commission on the Social Determinants of Health is announced, does an article on suntanning parlors make public health news in Canada? When the Commission includes two eminent Canadians, Monique Begin and Stephen Lewis, clearly recognizing the role of Canadians in fantastic and ground breakworking on the social determinants of health, the country should be rallying around them - including the media.
Mr. Picard, I urge you to actively join in these discussions. The media can be the greatest ally in turning around the rapidly sinking Titanic that is global health. We need your voice in publicly exploring the complexities of the social determinants of health.
And to Monique Begin and Stephen Lewis, my congratulations on your new work. It is of extreme value and, as a Canadian, I am very proud of your inclusion on this visionary Commission. You have your work cut out for you, especially at home.

Subject: [SDOH] G and M coverage of WHO story...
Given the choice of reporting on the WHO Commission on Social Determinants
of Health that includes two prominent Canadians or reporting on a WHO
report on the dangers of tanning salons, the G and M presses on with
reporting the key health issues of our day.

Tan salons risky, WHO warns
ANDRÉ PICARD
Today's Paper: Friday, March 18, 2005 12:00 AM Page A15
The World Health Organization is calling for a regulatory crackdown on
sun-tanning salons, saying their popularity is fuelling an epidemic
increase in skin cancer around the globe. In particular, the WHO says anyone
under the age of 18 should be banned from using a sunbed; tanning salons
should be forbidden from making health claims; and personnel should be
trained to ensure that equipment is used safely.
