What: Free Public Forum Is Immigrating a Health Hazard? The Health
Experience of Newcomers
When: Wednesday Oct 5, 7:30-8:00 Panel discussion
Where: St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, 27 Front Street East TORONTO

Ever heard of the "healthy immigrant effect"? The social determinants of
health? We hear a lot about the deficiencies of our health care system but
do we know how it affects New Canadians? It's the big issue at the St.
Lawrence Centre Forum the night of Wednesday October 5th and it's bound to
be on the agenda of the 4th International Conference on Urban Health to
held in Toronto October 26-28, 2005

The word has gone out about the forum and there has been immediate interest
from many quarters such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation, ethnic
organizations and the member of the provincial legislature from Scarborough
Agincourt.

- lively exchange between speakers and audience
- engaging speakers:

Eunadie Johnson: Executive Director, Women's Health in Women's Hands

Dennis Raphael: Associate Professor and Undergraduate Program Director,
School of Health Policy and Management, York University

Grace-Edward Galabuzi, Assistant Professor at Ryerson University in the
Department of Politics and Public Administration and author of Canada's
Economic Apartheid: The Social Exclusion of Racialized Groups in the New
Century.

A representative of the Ministry of Health Promotion has been invited.

Moderator: Adrian Harewood, freelance broadcaster

Nationally one quarter of immigrants reported difficulty accessing health
care. Challenges included waiting lists, high costs, language barriers and
an inability to find a doctor.

Is Canada squandering the health capital of new immigrants? How would a
more privatized health system serve newcomers? What impact will the
diminishing health experience of newcomers have on Canada?

Presented by the St. Lawrence Centre Forum and the Ontario Council of
Agencies Serving Immigrants (OCASI).
