FAMILY COURT DIVERSION PROJECT

A community-based research project to develop a collaborative response to understanding and appropriate actions to address the disproportionate representation of Aboriginal women involved in the child protection system.

CALL FOR RESEARCHER 

Ka Ni Kanichihk Inc. is seeking a qualified researcher to undertake a part-time, 15 month contract based in Winnipeg. The successful candidate will prepare, conduct, oversee and complete various research tasks and make recommendations for a second project phase to be conducted under separate contract. The goal of this collaborative research project is to improve the appropriateness and equity of responses of the child protection and family court systems to Aboriginal women and their families.

Tasks to be completed:
ü	Literature review of child protection diversion alternatives, with particular focus on Aboriginal families
ü	Finalize research plan, including protocols for ethics review
ü	Plan and conduct interviews with providers in the child protection and legal systems 
ü	Plan and conduct community-based interviews and focus groups
ü	Analyze and discuss preliminary findings
ü	Meet regularly with the research Steering Committee, providing recommendations and seeking advice
ü	Develop draft report and recommendations for further research.
ü	Develop and implement feedback activities to contributors
ü	Develop funding proposal for Phase 2
ü	Supervise and mentor research assistants
Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they have the following knowledge, skills and experience:

ü	Knowledge of  judicial process related to child protection
ü	Knowledge of Aboriginal women's issues, traditional systems and cultural practices
ü	Ability to conduct and manage a comprehensive research project including demonstrated knowledge of OCAP and culturally-based ethics protocols
ü	Experience in literature research, synthesis, and analysis
ü	Experience in community-based and ethnographic qualitative research methods
ü	Excellent written and spoken communication skills
Remuneration
The successful applicant will be under contract to Ka Ni Kanichihk and responsible to the Steering Committee. Researcher must provide her own workspace and computer. There may be some travel required.
