Hi Lela:

I am interested too, though feeling a bit isolated being up here in the
back of beyond... :) But count me in... I think a cross discipline,
cross border, cross national, cross sectoral, cross interest alliance
such as shows up on this list would be grand - feisty, hard to manage,
but ultimately worthwhile

Subject: [SDOH] SDOH Advocacy Committee

Hello all,

I have not given up on the proposal I made regarding the need to
organize
an advocacy group if we are to bring about changes in what has been
discussed.

I must say, however, that I am quite disappointed at the meager desire
to
participate actively; only 3 people expressed willingness to follow-up
and one
solicitor who would rather attract people in one organization rather
than
create many voices on similar agendas.

I wish to emphasize again, that SDOH discussions are only the first
step;
yes, they inform and connect people, but if any change is to take place,
it must go beyond identifying the problem. Being busy is not a good
excuse
to avoid taking some responsibility for the ideas and concerns you have
addressed.

This is to inform you of my follow-up on the initiative I had proposed
to the
Minister of Health regarding a review of the Health Protection and
Promotion
Act. I have received a copy of the Sars and Public Health Legislation,
Sars
Commission from the office of the Honourable Mr. Justice Archie Campbell
and
I have already responded on a specific recommendation he made, for his
consideration.

Also, based on same initiative of Prevention vs Remedial treatment, I
am
waiting for an appointment to be scheduled for me to see Mr. Jim
Watson,
Minister of Health Promotion. Needless to say, the staff are drugging
their
feet, but I am persistent.

On a personal level, I have requested a collaboration with the Canadian
Public
Health Association, which this can extend to many other
health-interested
organizations when SDOH organizes an advocacy group, so that we create a
roar
instead of a pip-squeak. It is active participation that brings change,
such as
the Rally; it has more gumption than any conference, summit or forum.
(Oppose and Expose Privatization Rally
June 3, 1pm
Queen's Park)

I suggest that we schedule a meeting for the last week of June either at
York U
if Dennis Raphael can arrange for a room for a 2-hour session to discuss
this
initiative, or if not possible, I can try to reserve a room at Metro
Hall in
downtown Toronto.
For people out of Province, the discussions will take place by e-mail.
etc.

Your feedback please,

Lela Gary

(I am listing excerpts from the voices on the proposal:

i) be inclusive, particularly of members of marginalized groups that are
the
most acutely affected by the SDOH, and
ii) allow remote participation via email,

I would gladly participate in an advocacy committee to bring theory into
action!

I'm all for participating in action that wants to bring about change.

I hope that as people consider advocacy and collective action, we'll
remember that there are groups already doing some of this work and
we/they
would welcome more recruits and partners. I coordinate Campaign 2000,
