Subject: [SDOH] Another Year Ends and an Offering

Friends:

Another year of SDOH activity ends...

The Good News (not necessarily in order of importance as much as top of
Dennis' mind):

1. Labour wins in Australia
2. Newfoundland Red Tories undertake a serious anti-poverty initiative
3. California Newsreel creates "Hidden Epidemic: Is Inequality Making Us
Sick?"
4. Numerous health agencies and NGOs in Canada address SDOH (see table in
attachment)
5. National Coordinating Centre on Determinants of Health at St. Francis
Xavier University begins its work
6. SDOH list maintains its 1200 members
7. Dennis gets to meet people in Louisville, Cleveland (twice), Hiram
Ohio, Seattle, Calgary, Halifax, Edmonton, St. Johns, Ottawa on
SDOH-related initiatives
8. Reaching for a Healthier Life; Facts on Socioeconomic Status and Health
in the U.S. published by MacArthur Foundation Research Network on SES &
Health
9. Policy Press and the Townsend Centre for International Poverty Research
in Bristol UK continue their work
10. Politics of Health Group at U Liverpool and Durham University continue
their activity
11. National Association of County and City Health Officials
publishesTackling Health Inequities Through Public Health Practice: A
Handbook for Action
12. Population Health Forum continues work at University of Seattle
13. Poverty and Policy in Canada: Implications for Health and Quality of
Life published
14. Canadian Senate Sub-Committee on Population Health addresses the
social determinants of health
15. Conrad Black convicted of three counts of fraud and one of obstruction

The Bad News
1. Income and wealth inequalities grow in Canada and USA
2. Poverty deepens and inequalities increase in Toronto
3. York University's proposed MA and PhD in Health Policy and Equity put
on hold for lack of funds/interest from/at the top
4. Published papers "Telling Stories: News Media, Health Literacy and
Public Policy in Canada" and "Spreading the News: Social Determinants of
Health Reportage in Canadian Daily Newspapers" present a bleak picture of
how newspaper media cover health issues.
5. Gene-related explanations for high incidence of type II diabetes among
marginalized and impoverished minorities raise their ugly heads by those
who should know better
6. Labour union strength continues to decline in Canada and USA
7. McGuinty government in Ontario needs 365 days to "set poverty targets"
and probably another four years to not do anything about it.
8. Harper government in Ottawa cuts more funding from Status of Women
Canada
9. Infant mortality rates increase in Alberta for second consecutive year
10. Public and media coverage of WHO Commission on SDOH virtually
non-existant
11. George Bush is still president of the USA

Attached is "Surmounting the Barriers: Making Action on the Social
Determinants of Health a Public Policy Priority" which will appear in
"Social Determinants of Health: Canadian Perspectives, 2nd Edition" in
February, 2009. that's right 2009.

Happy Holidays and the Best for the New Year!
