****Transplanted Bodies, Transformed Lives: The Commodification of
Human Organs****

Overview:

Improvements in transplant technology, the global commercialization of
health care, and the increasing divide between rich and poor have
created conditions for a thriving trade in human organs. The
commodification of human organs raises complex social, ethical, and
moral issues for all involved. This symposium will explore arguments in
favour of and against the legalization of the human organ trade. It
will bring together different perspectives from researchers, academics,
a transplant surgeon, and a kidney transplant recipient for discussion
and debate.

Presenters:

Lesley Sharp (Professor of Anthropology, Barnard College, and Senior
Research Scientists, Sociomedical Sciences, Mailman School of Public
Health, Columbia University)
Jeffrey Zaltzman (Chief Medical Officer of Transplant, Trillium Gift of
Life Network, and Associate Professor, University of Toronto)

Stephen Scharper (Associate Professor, Centre for the Study of Religion
and the Centre for the Environment, University of Toronto, and the
Department of Anthropology, University of Toronto at Mississauga)

Monir Moniruzzaman (CPHS Research Associate, HCTP Doctoral Fellow, and
PhD Candidate, Department of Anthropology, University of Toronto)

Robert Zurrer (Kidney Transplant Recipient)

Monday, January 28th, 2008, 2-5 pm, Room 154S
