Eating produce cuts heart-disease risk, study finds

But researchers question value in fighting cancer

By ANDRÉ PICARD
PUBLIC HEALTH REPORTER
Wednesday, November 3, 2004 - Page A25

New research is casting doubt on the widely accepted notion that eating a
lot of fruits and vegetables will prevent cancer...
Dr. Walter Willett, chairman of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard
University and senior author of the new research, said eating fruits and
vegetables is still sound advice. But he said claims that high fruit and
vegetable consumption will prevent cancer are "overstated" and not
supported by the data. ..SNIP

Earlier, Cancer Care Ontario stated:

"Up to 30% of cancers could be prevented if Ontario adults increased their
vegetable and fruit intake, were more physically active and maintained a
healthy
body weight."
