Title: Bringing Health Inequities from the Fringes into the Mainstream
Public Health Agenda.
Date & Time: Wednesday, 24 March 2010, 01:00 PM — 02:30 PM (Eastern Time)
Across Canada, many community health professionals are concerned about
Social Determinants of Health and health inequities.
Are they still lying out in the fringes of our work or are they on the
mainstream agenda?
Greater gains to the overall population health can be made if public
health resources are focused more on addressing health inequities.
This Fireside Chat will share examples of how the Region of Waterloo
Public Health and the Ontario Public Health Association's Access, Equity
and Social Justice Work Group
advocated for the inclusion of the health inequities agenda in the new
Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS), contributed to defining the
Public Health sector role in addressing health inequities, and developed
a public health planning approach that focuses on health inequities.
A planning model will be discussed that is based on the Foundational
Standard of the OPHS and the Population Health Assessment and
Surveillance (PHAS) Protocol, and uses both quantitative and
qualitative, research and practice driven, evidence to expose and
address health inequities.
Population health data, research, program evaluation, unique community
context, stakeholder perspectives, and other sources of evidence are
used to make program decisions that invest greater emphasis on
addressing health inequities.
