WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health: PHAC Symposium

Brief Description:

Symposium Title: WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health:
Informing Canada's Response

The Public Health Agency of Canada is sponsoring a Symposium, " WHO
Commission on Social Determinants of Health : Informing Canada's Response",
at the upcoming 12th Canadian Conference on International Health, November
8, 2005, 10:30 to12:00 pm, Crowne Plaza Hotel, Ottawa.

The WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health was launched this year
to address the problem of growing inequities in health status within and
between countries. Over a three year period, the Commission aims to lever
policy change by compiling evidence on the science and action on the social
determinants of health, widening societal debate on the topic and proposing
global and national policies for action.

The Public Health Agency of Canada, in conjunction with the Canadian
Reference Group (to advise on and help coordinate Canada's contribution to
and follow-up on the Commission) is hosting this symposium to share
information on the goals, streams of work and expected outcomes of the new
Commission and to invite feedback on considerations to shape Canada's
response to the Commission. Panellists of the symposium are:

Monique Bégin is one of two Canadian Commissioners on the WHO Commission
on Social Determinants of Health. Ms. Bégin was the first woman from
Québec elected to the House of Commons and was twice appointed Minister
of National Health and Welfare. She has received several honorary
doctorates in recognition of her contribution to human rights and to
public policies, although she remains best known for her leadership on
   the Canada Health Act.
Elizabeth Gyorfi-Dyke is the Director of the Canadian Population Health
Initiative (CPHI), of the Canadian Institute for Health Information
   (CIHI).
Ron Labonteis the Canada Research Chair in Globalization/Health Equity
at the Institute of Population Health at the University of Ottawa.
Sylvie Stachenko is the Deputy Chief Public Health Officer of the Public
   Health Agency of Canada.
