Media Advisory - Largest annual gathering of public health experts will
address new threats to public health, health inequalities in Canada 97th
meeting of the Canadian Public Health Association and its partners to be
held May 28-31 in Vancouver

    OTTAWA, May 23 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Public Health Association
(CPHA) and partners will hold its 97th annual meeting in Vancouver from May
28 to 31, 2006. This year's conference will examine new and emerging global
threats to public health, as well as how factors such as education, income,
ethnicity, and gender interact to influence the health of Canadians and
their communities.
    The conference brings together researchers, policy-makers and health
practitioners to address many relevant and timely public health issues,
including the health gap between Aboriginal communities and other
Canadians;
chronic disease and injury prevention; how the health of Canadians is
impacted by global challenges including climate change and poverty; and new
and emerging infectious diseases that threaten the health of Canadians.
    The conference is the largest annual gathering of public health experts
in Canada, bringing together key public health players from professional
associations, non-governmental organizations and various levels of
government.
This year's event is undertaken in partnership with the Canadian Institute
for Health Information - Canadian Population Health Initiative (CIHI-CPHI),
the Canadian Institutes of Health Research - Institute of Population and
Public Health (CIHR-IPPH), and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC),
and in association with the Public Health Association of British Columbia.

    What: The Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) 97th Annual
Conference "What Determines the Public's Health"
    Key topics include: a progress report on the WHO Commission on the
Social Determinants of Health and Canada's contributions; the state of
public health in Canada; major health inequalities across Canada;
Aboriginal
health indicators; urban health perspectives; social change for public
health; infectious and chronic diseases: tests and trends; healthy weights
and obesity; public health human resources in Canada and global public
health workforce development; modern public health legislation;
and BC's strategic approach to public health.
