The foregoing discussion reminds me of a training activity in which I
participated about 15 years ago in New Orleans. We were all involved in
community-based interventions for adolescents and a couple of the
participants were community organizers/residents from one of the New
Orleans' parishes. One of the woman told how the community was sick and
tired of the organizations in the area using the statistics regarding the
community to get big dollar grants to provide one service or another and
then, when the money ran out, so did the organizations. The community
declared that they would no longer be used in that fashion and demanded
that no funding proposals be submitted without the community at the table
with an at least equal voice. The speaker noted that while less money was
coming into the community to fix outside determined problems, the problems
the community identified did get money and the programs
remained even after the money left.

That training changed how I put together funding proposals that will impact
a community. I also now require that my institution commit to supporting
the project once the grant dollars are gone.
