Dear All
BACKGROUND: Sri Lanka is a developing country with a
population of 20 million. Our Occupational Health and
Safety (OHS)legislation is being reviewed. There are
several problems facing this sector. Almost 50% of
workers are in the 'informal' sector, i.e.
self-employed, unemployed, rural peasent agricultural
workers, casual manual workers etc. The formal sectors
have also not paid adequate attention to occupational
health: There are a few benefit packages, but rarely
do we find a systematic health screening programme
coverign workers. Work related injuries and
compensation systems are weak and patchy. We are in
urgent need of a systematic programme to improve
workers' and farmers' health.

INFORMATION REQUEST:
I wish to obtain info on the following:
1) Resources which describe OHS structures in other
countries. I am mainly interested about the system to
provide screening and monitoring health of workers (is
it through insurance schemes; or the state sector-The
health sector is dominated by a tax-funded state
system in Sri Lanka).
2) OHS Legislation used in other countries. A
publication which compares countries would be the
ideal.
Thanks
Saroj Jayasinghe
