Thanks Jim

Education powerfully affects health, but I would add to the text of the diagram the fact that health affects education - e.g. malnourished kids can't learn properly, nor can kids with undiagnosed hearing loss (very common among Australian Aboriginal children).

Thanks for the Nancy Krieger article. I have lots of her articles, but I hadn't come across that one. I have huge respect for her work.

Cheers
Melissa

Hello Lara,

The local health department I work in (Cook County Department of Public Health, outside Chicago, Illinois, USA) has adopted the WHO framework and modified it a bit. I find in using this with my coworkers it generates good discussion, and is clear about the origins of health inequities in the 'structure' box. I added the education financing example, which people are aware of here but often don't connect to health.

An article that addresses this in detail is Krieger, N. (2017). Health Equity and the Fallacy of Treating Causes of Population Health as if They Sum to 100. Am J Public Health, 107(4), 541-549, which I'm attaching.

Build power for health equity!
