The consequence, however, of not recognizing heritage, albeit Ashkenazi 
Jewish or otherwise, is not to be taken lightly. 1 in 40 Ashkenazi 
Jewish women will carry the BRCA genes, specifically the BRCA1 gene. 
This heritable mutation puts these women at a high risk of not only 
breast cancer but also ovarian cancer. For Ashkenazi Jewish women who 
carry the BRCA 1 gene, their risk of breast cancer is estimated to be 
apprx 85% and apprx 30-40% of ovarian cancer. Women may be able to 
survive breast cancer as 75-80% of breast cancers are diagnosed in early 
stages. The reverse is true for ovarian cancer.
The genetic link in colorectal cancer also exists.
While I understand the concerns of 'labeling' an entire population, the 
fact remains that I would at some point to stop losing my Jewish women 
friends. The fact remains that today those at risk are having 
prophlactic surgeries to reduce, not eliminate their risk. At the 
moment, there is no other option.
