It is the responsibility of the medical/scientific community, morally
and ethically, to care for, and research for, patients as a whole rather
than only as a sum of defined parts. The issues of race-based
decision-making is a long outstanding issue and as the article points
out there is not one easy answer to genetics/health issues/sdoh, but the
genetics issue is a key element for many. Until recently, black women
irrespective of personal social status (have told me) had been advised
they could not carry the BRCA mutations because they were black - a fact
which is totally untrue. (BRCA mutations can increase the risk of breast
cancer by 80%; ovarian cancer by 40%). The research did, in fact,
exclude black women and other minorities, but the distorted and
erroneous message was interpreted and not understood in the community
and therefore, the potential of serious concerns was discounted. The
fact that black women and other minorities were, and still are
underrepresented in the research is a significant concern for
appropriate care and survival. And, it's not just a U.S. issue.
