International leaders critique health promotion at world conference in
Vancouver, Canada
    VANCOUVER, June 5 /CNW/ - From international leaders to grassroots
educators, over 3,000 experts in health promotion are converging for the
largest conference of its kind at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition
Centre from June 10-15, 2007 in Canada.
    Presented every three years by the International Union for Health
Promotion and Education (IUHPE), the conference will review and critically
reassess health promotion's progress, and help set the course for new
health challenges in an increasingly globalized world. Cutting-edge
research and international success stories will be among the highlights of
the conference.
    "The conference is a great platform to show that health promotion
works," says Dr. Marcia Hills, conference chair and President of the local
host organization, the Canadian Consortium for Health Promotion Research.
    "Whether it's obesity, diabetes or HIV/AIDS, health promotion allows us
to respond to today's major health issues and prepare for future
challenges," she says. "Health promotion focuses on creating sustainable
health systems and empowering individuals and communities to take control
of their own wellbeing."
    Over 450 scientific sessions, question and answer interactive panels
and presentations in English, French and Spanish cover all aspects of
health promotion, including addictions, aboriginal health, tobacco use,
policy, food supply, aging, and more.
