KF: Very early on in my career, in medical school, I realized that I wanted
to have a much stronger impact on health rather than patient care. One
really canմ work in HIV or STDs [sexually transmitted diseases] without
doing public health; the natures of the epidemics, the populations that are
affected really dictates that you have got to understand social context and
social determinants in order to really prevent these conditions. I think my
career path has been preparing me for this [job at CDC].
