I'm sorry to hear that we've lost one of the most humane scholars I've ever
had the privilege to know.  I benefited more that I can possibly say from
his advice on much of my writing, not only because he saw to the heart of
each idea, but also because he was so supportive in his suggestions.  He
presented even his most incisive criticism gently.  I will miss his
generous and kind guidance and support.
