TWAIN AND QUAYLE
The Baltimore SUN carried a note several days ago titled "QUAYLE
CORRECT ON TWAIN QUOTE." It says that in the wake of the vice
president's misspelling of "potato," he quoted Twain as saying,
"You should never trust a man who has only one way to spell a
word." Initially, scholars could not locate the quotation among
Twain's quips in the usual reference works. Now the quotation
has been located and shown to be truly from Twain. The newspaper
article fails to say where the quotation occurs, however.
Does anyone have an idea of where the quotation can be located in
the Twain canon?
