Hurray, I think I have finally been able to access -- I work
with my students on CONFER and have been too lazy to see how to
access this part of the system. About the "racism." I have
been working for a number of years with the illustrations of
Twain's first editions. One of the interesting ways to get
students into the "historical" frame of mind when teaching
Huck Finn is to use an illustrated text -- the one with the
Kemble designs. (I will be adding a chapter on the "How To"
for the textbook for Huck Finn. But, for now, look at the
last illustrations and talk about how Twain would/would not
have wanted this picture in the book if he indeed meant it
to be at all racist.
