Twain made a whistle stop through Butte on August 1, 1895 where
he gave a lecture. According to NOTEBOOKS, he had this to say about the
experience:
"Butte, Mont., Aug. 1. Beautiful audience. Compact,
intellectual and dressed in perfect taste. It surprised me to find this
London-Parisian-New York audience out in the mines. [He gives a list of
the numbers read]:
        Dead Man
        Christening
        Frog.
        Old Ram
        Smallpox
        Watermelon
        Crusade
        Golden Arm
One hour and 30 minutes. Just Right. Left out the Duel."

It is worth noting that he embarked upon this lecturing tour on
July 14, 1895, the last day he would see Susy alive.
