folks:  I was reminded of MT in this review, esp. regarding Salinger's
"Aquarium" and the nasty implications some have had about JS's sexual
tastes.

I also think teenagers commonly respond to HF and CITR in similar ways,
though in suggesting that I am not interested in really supporting with
such nonesuch as evidence etc.

ps:  I happened to see Deep Impact over the weekend (a rivetting
$100-million B-movie classic if there ever was one) and noticed that, in
trying to comfort a wounded & blinded spaceman, Robert Duvall pulls out two
novels to read to him:  Moby Dick and AHF.  Sadly for Twainians, he turns
to "Call Me Ishmael...."  still not a bad choice.  A poignant moment in the
annals of film....

personally I love teaching F&Z nowadays (as I am this semester), as opposed
to Catcher; and like Salinger's writing a lot, though it is not in the same
orbit as a dozen other modern American writers, in my opinion.  Both are
filled with what appears to be PTSD;  by way of reminder, Salinger was
present at the liberation of Dachau. . . .
