  A CANADIAN UNIVERSITY CONSORTIUM ON HEALTH IN DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP
     June 20-22, 1997 at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario.


Registration is limited to fifty participants. Participants will be
registered as soon as the completed registration form and cheque are
received.

The conference will be held in the newly renovated Donald Gordon Centre.
They have accommodation available on site. There is also accommodation
available at the Queen's University residences. Once registration has been
confirmed, a further information package will be mailed to participants.
This will include information on accommodations as well as further
information about the International Maternal and Child Health Workshop.

  A CANADIAN UNIVERSITY CONSORTIUM ON HEALTH IN DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

                        JUNE 20-23, 1997
                        QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY
                        KINGSTON, ONTARIO, CANADA

** GOAL **

The goal of this workshop is to develop a core curriculum on International
Maternal and Child Health Priorities for the 21stcentury, for use in
Canadian universities and colleges as well as in less developed countries.

** MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE WORKSHOP **

The workshop will consist of an opening plenary session providing an
overview of the Convention on the Rights of the Child as it relates to the
major priorities in maternal and child health in both developing and
developed countries, including Canada's northern native communities.

Subsequent components of the workshop will be in interactive smaller
groups. Topics while will be addressed include PREVENTION strategies to
reduce maternal and childhood morbitidy and mortality including:

 *      immunization
 *      nutrition which includes promotion of breastfeeding, Vitamin A
        supplementation and iodine fortification of essential food(s),
        growth monitoring
 *      prevention of diarrheal diseases by environmental changes and
        treatment of diarrheal diseases with oral rehydration solutions
 *      identification and management of acute respiratory infections by
        community health workers
 *      the impact of AIDS on women and children, including AIDS orphans
        violence against women and children, including child abuse, sexual
        abuse, accidental injuries
 *      the effect of war on women and children - including community
        based rehabilitation initiatives, land mines
 *      Safe Motherhood initiatives including an understanding of the
        underlying problems, the constraints in providing accessible,
        appropriate preventive and curative life saving interventions

Information about learning resources available in each of the priority
areas will also be available.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

 #      Faculty members from diverse disciplines who are interested in
        learning more about international maternal and child health
        priorities so that they can integrate this into their teaching

 #      Students from diverse disciplines such as Medicine, Nursing,
        Rehabilitation Therapy, Anthropology, Public Health who want to
        learn more about international health for planning summer
        electives in less developed regions

 #      Students and faculty who are interested in future careers in
        international health

LOCATION

The conference will be held at the Queen's University Donald Gordon
Conference Centre in Kingston, Ontario

REGISTRATION

The conference fees include all educational sessions, materials,
continental breakfasts, nutrition breaks during the conference.
Registration fees have been reduced for students in order to
encourage and facilitate their participation.

Student registration: $ 75.00
