One likely possibility is that Mark Twain learned about folklore from Mary
Ann Cord (of "A True Story") at Quarry Farm.  He deals with her in "A
Family Sketc," published only in pieces in Caroline Harnsberger, MARK
TWAIN FAMILY MAN.
