                           TRAINING PROGRAM IN
                 PRIMARY HEALTH CARE AND HEALTH MANAGEMENT

The Community Health Department, Christian Medical College, Vellore, is
offering a 3 weeks course in Primary Health Care and Health Management in
August 1997.  This course is primarily for those interested in
International Health and Public Health.  Medical Students as well as
students of public health are eligible for admission to this course.

Background information of the Community Health Department, Christian
Medical College, Vellore:

Christian Medical College & Hospital was established in 1900.  From humble
beginings, it has grown to be one of the leading institutions of this
region. Currently it has a 1300 bed tertiary level hospital with
specialties and sub- specialties.  It trains physicians, nurses and allied
health science professionals at diploma, graduate, postgraduate and
doctoral level.  It also provides primary and secondary level health
services to a community of over 2,50,000 population.  These services
provided by the Community Health Department, started 40 years ago, has
been re-orienting and expanding its rural program, into a Community Health
and Development Program (CHAD).

Vellore town with a population of over 200,000 is situated 100 miles West
of Madras on the Madras-Bangalore high-way and 130 miles East of
Bangalore. Madras is the nearest international airport.  There are direct
flights from Europe by British and Lufthansa Airlines and from the east by
Malaysian and Singapore Airlines.

CHAD's community oriented program aims at:

*      a holistic approach to the overall well being of both the individual and
       the community;

*      motivation for social and economic development especially focusing on
       empowerment of women and their health needs through the primary,
       secondary and tertiary level health care services;

*      self-employment, primarily for women, through acquiring new skills,
       especially in non-traditional women's activities such as welding and
       masonry;

*      improving the environment through social forestry, water management, low
       cost sewage disposal system, and use of solar energy;

*      community based field training for health professionals at all levels.

CHAD works in close collaboration with various sectors of the Government
such as departments of Health, Rural Development, Agriculture and Animal
Husbandry.

Primary Health Care and Health Management Training Program:

The 3 week program on Primary Health Care and Health Management is
organized for health professionals interested in primary health care,
international health, and health policy.  Students who wish to do
electivesz are also eligible.  The 3 weeks course aims to expose the
participants to:

I.     Principles of primary health care
       1.     Community participation
       2.     Intersectoral approach
       3.     Use of appropriate technology
       4.     Equitable distribution

II.    Health policy and health delivery system
       1.     National health care delivery system
       2.     National programs - Tuberculosis Control, Leprosy Control, EPI,
              CSSM, Nutrition etc.

III.   Organization of a referral system
       1.     Referral system from village to tertiary level health care units
       2.     Requirements for establishing a referral system
       3.     Documentation and feedback

IV.    Organization of health information for management and
       evaluation
       1.     Elements of a Health Information System (HIS)
       2.     Organization of a Health Information System
       3.     Use of HIS in management, evaluation and health systems research

V.     Use of health volunteers for primary health care
       1.     Selection criteria and process of selection
       2.     Strategies for training health care workers
       3.     Supervision and evaluation

VI.    Evaluation & monitoring of programs
       1.     Epidemiological approach
       2.     Statistical analysis

VII.   Use of risk approach
       1.     Definition of risk approach
       2.     Identification of risk factors
       3.     Organization of a Maternal & Child Health Care program using the
              risk approach

Learning Method :  Learning methods will include site visits to the health
and development programs, interaction with community leaders and health
professionals at all levels, classroom exercises using community based
data, lectures and seminars.

Date          :  11th to 23rd August 1997
Course Fee    :  USD 500 to be paid by cheque

Board & Lodging :  The Community Health Training Center has a guest house
with two seater rooms and attached bath rooms and a canteen.  Cost of
board and lodging will be approximately 8 USD per day.

How to apply : Those interested are requested to send the enclosed
application before 31st of August.  Confirmed registration will take place
only after the receipt of course fee and an advance of 100 USD towards
board and lodging.  Visa is required for all visitors.
