Research Assistant - Qualitative Research
on Lay Perceptions of Tobacco Control
Researchers at the University of Toronto are seeking a Research Assistant
to work on the qualitative component of a study of smoking behaviour,
attitudes and tobacco control legislation.
About the study.
The overall study consists of two components: (a) a province-wide random
sample survey of smokers and non-smokers, covering a broad range of topics
related to smoking behaviour, attitudes and tobacco control, and (b) a
qualitative component comprising 5 focus groups and 20 individual in-depth
interviews with a self-selected sample of survey respondents from the metro
Toronto area for the purpose of exploring in greater depth the perceptions
and experiences of tobacco control by smokers and non-smokers, especially
with respect to restrictions on where people can smoke (which permits the
linking of quantitative and qualitative data for our respondents). The
study is funded by Health Canada (NHRDP).
Role and responsibilities of the Research Assistant.
The Research Assistant , working closely with and under the supervision of
the Principle Investigator for this arm of the study, will assist in (a)
the coding and analysis of the data collected, and (b) the preparation of
material for inclusion in publications for scientific or academic journals.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will:
- posses a relevant Master's degree in the social
or behavioural sciences
- have demonstrated qualitative research skills
(particularly the coding & analysis of focus
group and individual interviews, but preferably
also integrating multiple sources of data,
linking qualitative and quantitative data souces,
and writing up qualitative research for lay and
scientific audiences)
- have previous experience using qualitative
analysis software (esp. NUD*IST), preferably
in a Macintosh environment
- the ability to work independently as part
of a team is essential
- prior knowledge of smoking and tobacco
control would be an asset
- have experience in the (successful) preparation
of materials for peer-reviewed publication in
reputable journals.
- some knowledge of (and experience with)
quantitative survey data analysis would be
a strong asset (most particularly: managing
data spreadsheets, generating frequencies and
cross-tabs, simple tests of significance)

position, ending late March or early April 1997
Start Date: mid to late October
Renumeration: approximately $ 1,800 per month, plus benefits
