Hi all. You all know that smoking affects almost all
organs from scalp to foot. Only in USA 400,000 people
die from skoking related effects which is one fifth of
the total death of USA. Smoking is a contributory
factor for pregnancy related complications like,
spontaneous abortion, low birth weight, prematurity,
intrauterine growth retardation, abraption placentie,
placenta previa and perinatal death.
Interestingly somking has some beneficial effect on
pre-eclampsia. Smoking reduces the severity of
pre-eclamptia. A cohort study conducted by Agudelo C.
et-al on 1999 (Cigarette smoking during pregnancy and
relative risk of preeclampsia: a systemic review,
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vol 181
(4), Oct 1999, PP 1026-1035) shows that smoking
reduces the severity of preeclampsia (typical RR 0.68,
95% CI 0.67-0.69). 10 cigaretres a day reduces 23% to
33% reduction of pre-eclampsia. Stopping smoking
before pregnancy has no significant effect. The
explanation behind that, smoking reduces release of
cytokines like TNF, IL1, 2, 6, and 10 (responsible for
pre-eclampsia) from the endometrium and smoking also
has some antioxidant activity.
Whether it is true or some intervention of the result
by some cigarette company or some thing like that, I
really don't know. Do any one of you have conducted
such a study or gone through such type of result?
