Dear colleagues,

you may be interested to know that on Monday, 12 May 1997, there will
be a technical briefing of delegates of the World Health Assembly
currently taking place in Geneva.

I found the introductory text to the briefing interesting and, thus,
here it is for you to read it.

TECHNICAL BRIEFING

Monday, 12 May

13h00 - 14h00 Fourth International Conference on Health Promotion,
Jakarta, Indonesia, 21-25 July 1997

This briefing will be held in Room VIII.

The fourth International Conference on Health Promotion: "New Players
for a New Era", which will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 21 to
25 July 1997, will be the fourth in a series of international
conferences that have motivated many governments to develop an
approach to health promotion and public health embracing all sectors
of society and the environment. The Jakarta conference will draw and
build on such experience of successful cooperation between public and
private sectors, governments and nongovernmental organizations, lay
people and professionals, providing a platform for debate for health
promotion in both developed and developing countries.

The purpose of the conference is to evaluate past experience,
determine scenarios and future health trends and build partnerships
and alliances with both the public and private sectors, as well as
nongovernmental organizations, for concerted action in health
promotion. Results of the conference - which are expected to include
principles of success, strategies for the future, priority action
areas, action taken in the developing regions, and the initiation of
new health promotion alliances - will form the basis of a Jakarta
Declaration. Such elements are an integral part of a dynamic five-year
WHO action plan to strengthen capacity for health promotion at local,
national and international levels.
