Gary Wills' column printed in the Baltimore SUN today
(April 13) contains one paragraph devoted to Mark Twain. The
column appears on the Op-Ed page (11A).
The paragraph sizes up Twain's attitudes on bigotry:
"Mark Twain was a courageous oppoonent of anti-black
racism. He was as untouched by anti-Semitism as anyone in his
time. But he settled for demeaning generalizations about Navive
Americans. And he was particularly vicious toward the Irish."
The rest of the article deals with "politically correct
ethnic bigotry" practiced today and has little reference to
Twain.
