DKProj at York University is moving the CANCERNT file database from its
current site:

ftp://ftp.yorku.ca/pub/york_other/Distributed_Learning_Project/CANCERNET/

which one can reach by web browser - but which is also a bit slow:

to: http://www.yorku.ca/research/dkproj/CANCERNET

The site contains 'state of the knowledge' files from the US National
Cancer Institute, under an agreement to post the material here. It will be
a lot easier when the site is at its new location but you can search it
now.

To do so, download or read on screen the first two files at the site:
00intro and 00readme Be patient if it takes a few minutes to load
00readme. It is 78K (about 10 pages) and on a slow machine. The best
strategy is to download it and search it by key word in your own
wordprocessor (eg. Wordpad in Windows 95) There are files aimed at the
'family doctor' level care giver and at the patient and family. They are
for 'just-in-time-learning' to keep current, not a substitute for the
technical sources in MedLine if one is a researcher.

There are (for example) several files on bone marrow cancer and the side
effects of treatment regimes (useful to the patient and the family)

In response to the query about re-inventing the wheel in community level
tobacco research - the 00readme file cites the following - all of which
are at the ftp://ftp.... site listed above: (the cn-6xxxxx) are files in
the same ftp directory.

Tobacco smoke, environmental cn-600039
Tobacco, smokeless, as a substitution for cigarettes cn-600339
Tobacco, smoking and cancer cn-600314
Tobacco, smoking, results of community effort to enhance
cigarette smokers quit rates (COMMIT) cn-600344
Tobacco, smoking, Community Intervention Trial for Smoking
Cessation (COMMIT), Q & A cn-600345

DKProj is mounting the CANCERNET database both as a service and as an
example of a 'best practice' approach (by the US National Cancern
Institute) as a source and provider of information to this 'public
electronic space'. [Note: based on US demographics, the text database is
also available in Spanish.]
