CSIH launches a health reform technical cooperation project in Bolivia
---------------------------------------------------------------------
CSIH is pleased to announce that it has just signed an agreement with the
South America Branch of the Canadian International Development Agency
(CIDA) to assist Bolivia with its health reform efforts. The project,
entitled "Building Capacity for Health Reform in Bolivia", seeks to
strengthen health management capacities at the municipal level; improve
national information systems; support the establishment and capacity
building of integrated delivery systems; and assist with the design and
implementation of sustainable, equity-based health policies.

The project is financed at $3 million over four years. The goal is to match
Canadian expertise with Bolivian needs through a combination of short,
medium and long-term technical cooperation assignments, and through the
development of institutional linkages between Canadian and Bolivian
organizations involved in health. We invite Society members with an
interest in getting involved - especially those who speak Spanish - to
contact Marc Hyndman, the Project Manager. Marc can be reached by telephone
at (613) 230-8401, ext. 304; by fax at (613) 230-8401, or by e-mail at

The project promises to benefit both countries. Bolivia will learn from
Canada's experience in the health reform process and the reorientation of
its primary health care approach. In turn, Canada will learn from Bolivia's
indigenous model of a decentralized health care system based on the
shared-management of services by municipalities, community groups and
health sector authorities.

A formal signing ceremony with Hon. Don Boudria, Minister of International
Cooperation and Minister for la Francophonie, is planned for March 6 at
17:30 at the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa, Room l'Orangerie. CSIH invites all
interested members and non-members who happen to be in Ottawa on that day
to attend. The ceremony will involve short presentations by Mr. Boudria,
Mrs. Fran Perkins, and Mrs. Myriam Paz, Chargee d'Affaire at the Bolivian
Embassy, followed by a Vin d'Honneur. Please RSVP Carmela Graziani at
(613)230-2654, ext. 316.

au niveau municipal; d'ameliorer les systemes d'information en sante;
d'appuyer le developpement et renforcement de systemes de sante integres;

RSVP Camela Graziani a
