Hello all,

I've been asked to look for literature around the best age to introduce
breast self exam and testicular self exam into a school sexual health
promotion/awareness program. Our nurses do these presentations in
schools, and there is some disagreement as to the best age to discuss
BSE and TSE in the classes. Mostly this is done (ny understanding) in
the grade 7-8 range, with some in grade 6. However there seems to be
some pressure to go to lower grades, and this is where the debate around
age appropriateness of breast self exam and testicular self exam come
in; this is not an abstract "when-you're older" discussion but as I
understand it includes BSE/TSE method.

My most pressing question is whether or not there is anything in the
literature that looks at most-appropriate-age for this level of
discussion. There is obviously some practical, common sense
consideration related to age and physical development; but more support
seems to be needed.

Any assistance is appreciated. Please reply direct to me at
