EMERGENCY EVALUATION IN PRACTICE
Acapulco, Mexico 10-15 November 1997
CIET will run a five-day intensive hands-on emergency evaluation colloquium
and training seminar for Spanish-speaking evaluators.
The colloquium focuses on the use of Sentinel Community Surveys (SCS) in
emergency settings, drawing on its direct experience in a wide range of
emergencies, including the current climatological emergency in Acapulco. A
practical field exercise in Acapulco will demonstrate data collection and
analysis in the cross-design used by CIET in emergencies; the cross-design
method includes a household survey, institutional reviews, key informant
and other rapid appraisal techniques, and the epidemiological use of data
from focus groups and community meetings.
CIET emergency experience includes industrial disasters (Bhopal,
Guadalajara), political/war emergencies (Eritrea, Nicaragua, Angola,
Liberia, Somalia and Afghanistan) and climatological emergencies (Costa
Rica, India). A case study will be offered of CIET's work with land mines
(Bosnia, Mozambique, Cambodia and Afghanistan).
The convener of the colloquium is Professor Neil Andersson.
All proceedings will be in Spanish. No translation facilities can be
provided.
The participation fee of $1,000 includes teaching materials and fieldwork.
CIET can offer advice regarding accommodation needs.
CIET also runs Masters and Doctoral programmes in evidence-based planning,
with concentrations in applied epidemiology, medical biotechnology and
clinical epidemiology.
