Tribute to Norbert Prefontaine
------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Norbert Prefontaine,
a consultant dealing with indigenous health issues for the Canadian Society
for International Health. Norbert, 69, died of a heart attack on December
28, 1996. A funeral service was held on Saturday, January 4th, 1996 in
Hull, Quebec.

In 1992, Norbert retired as Assistant Deputy Minister of the
Intergovernmental and International Affairs Branch at Health and Welfare
Canada. He began his career in the Federal civil service with the
Centennial Commission. He also served in the Privy Council before joining
Health and Welfare Canada.

He helped organize the First Conference for Indigenous Health in North
America, which led the Pan American Health Organization to pass a
resolution integrating indigenous health among its activities.

Norbert always had a strong interest in indigenous health issues and in
community and non-governmental organizations.

We will fondly remember him.
