WESTERN REGIONAL HEALTH BOARD
PRESS RELEASE
21 October 1996

"MOBILE BREAST SCREENING VAN HOME-SITE TO BE IN YARMOUTH"

In November 1995, the Western Regional Health Board decided to become a
participating member in the Nova Scotia Breast Screening Program (NSBSP).
To comply with the standards set by the BSBSP, the region has ordered a
mobile breast screening van and we anticipate its arrival in January 1997.

At the 18 October 1996 meeting of the WRHB, the Board decided to locate the
"home-site" for the mobile van at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. In addition
to being the home-site for the mobile van, the Hospital will also serve as
the site where the screening mammograms will be read by radiologists. "The
other existing sites in the region where mammography work is currently
being done will continue to provide uninterrupted service to the women in
their local areas", states Victor Maddalena, CEO for the WRHB.

The region has invited physicians from its health facilities to begin the
next stage of planning in order to determine where and how the further
diagnostic work-up and treatment will be co-ordinated within the region.

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death of women in Canada.
Screening mammography is intended to encourage women in the high risk age
groups to have a screening mammogram done on a regular basis. The objective
of screening mammography is to detect cancers at a very early stage and
initiate treatment. The mobile breast screening van will travel to all
communities in the Western Region.
