Type of Appointment: Grant - Term to March 2003, with the possibility of
renewal
Position Summary: The Research Coordinator will support the principal
investigator and co-investigators and communicate with
community-based, professional and academic research partners and
collaborators. Major areas of responsibility include the following:
developing data collection instruments, case study and interview protocols
in consultation with the research team; recruiting study
participants; coordinating and participating in the conduct of case
studies, surveys and regional forums; data management, verification and
storage; coordinating and participating in data analysis; and managing the
budget.
The Research Coordinator will also be responsible for managing the research
schedule and ensuring that the research objectives are met and
timelines are adhered to; liaising with a diverse range of project
participants; supervising staff and student research assistants; preparing
interim and final reports in collaboration with the research team; and
communicating the results through conference presentations and papers
for academic, professional, and lay audiences.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Masters level research degree in Social Science or Health field
(e.g., sociology, social work, anthropology) or equivalent combination of
non research/professional Masters degree (e.g., health promotion) and
research experience..
Experience: Two years experience in relevant social science research,
particularly qualitative research.
Prior experience with community based action research would be a definite
asset. Experience implementing and coordinating large multi-site
interdisciplinary research studies; supervising data collection and
management in secure settings. Familiarity with University of Toronto
administrative procedures required to coordinate a multi-site research
project a strong asset. Experience in administering research budgets.
Experience in community development, preferably in the context of hospital
community collaboration. Experience working with ethno-culturally diverse
communities a definite asset. Prior exposure to social theory.
Skills: Computer literacy in word processing, the internet, reference
management and software for the analysis of qualitative data. Web page
design/management skills. Knowledge of the healthcare system.
Capacity and appreciation for critical reflexivity in research, including
appreciation of values-based practice and research; the ability to support
and conduct research in a political environment; and the capacity to
analyze, synthesize, and appreciate data in context are also required.
Ability to speak French would be an asset.
Other: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; superior
organizational and supervisory skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diversity of stakeholders
from different professional ethno-cultural and social class backgrounds.
Superior social and interpersonal skills in facilitation and negotiation
across the different cultures and institutional settings of various
partners, collaborators and study participants, including the ability to
creatively address misunderstandings as they develop.
