  INTERNATIONAL MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH PRIORITIES

 A CANADIAN UNIVERSITY CONSORTIUM ON HEALTH IN DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

                        JUNE 20-22, 1997
                QUEENS UNIVERSITY, KINGSTON, ONTARIO, CANADA

The goal of this workshop is to develop a core curriculum on International
Maternal and Child Health Priorities for the 21st century for use in
Canadian universities and colleges as well as in less developed countries.

Friday evening, June 20

     The Convention on the Rights of the Child related to the
        major priorities in maternal and child health in both
        developing and developed countries including Canada - Dr.
        Heather Onyett (Queens University)

     The effect of war and internal conflict on women and children
        -Dr. Eric Hoskins experiences in Iraq, Burundi,
        Rwanda

Saturday and Sunday morning, June 21-22 (interactive groups)

     Nutrition including promotion of breastfeeding, Vitamin A and
        other micronutrient deficiencies, growth monitoring -
        Professor Joan-Allen Peters (Acadia University)

     Child Survival and Development Initiatives including strategies to
        reduce morbidity and mortality from diarrheal
        diseases by oral rehydration therapy and environmental changes,
        identification and management of acute
        respiratory infections, the expanded programme on
        immunization - Dr. Donald Hillman (University of Ottawa)
        and Dr. Heather Onyett

     Safe Motherhood initiatives including an understanding of the
        underlying problems, the constraints in providing
        accessible, appropriate preventive and curative life-saving
        interventions - Dr. Paul Mackenzie (Queens University)

     The impact of AIDS on women and children, including AIDS orphans -
        Dr. Donald Hillman

     Community based rehabilitation of women and children with
        disabilities due to multiple causes including landmines
        - Dr. Malcolm Peat and the International Centre of Excellence
        for the Advancement of Community Based
        Rehabilitation

     Training health care workers in Canadas northern nursing stations,
        in rural areas of Pakistan and in Bangladesh -
        Mr. Michael Ladouceur, RN, MPH (McMaster University)

     Educational Lessons learned from BRAC (the Bangladesh Rural
        Advancement Committee) in the training of girls
        in innovative non-traditional schools - Dr. Donald Campbell
        (Queens University Faculty of Education)

     Evaluation of Canadian Student involvement in international
        maternal and child health initiatives in Malawi (the
        University of Ottawa students) and in Guyana (Queens
        Medical Outreach students and a medical student from the University
        of Guyana)

Information about learning resources will also be available.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

*Faculty members from diverse disciplines who are interested in learning
more about international maternal and child
health priorities so that they can integrate this into their teaching

*Students from diverse disciplines such as Medicine, Nursing,
Rehabilitation Therapy, Anthropology, Public Health who
want to learn more about international health for planning summer
electives in less developed regions

*Students and faculty interested in future careers in international health

LOCATION: The conference will be held at the Queens University Donald
Gordon Conference Centre in Kingston, Ontario.

REGISTRATION: The conference fees include all educational sessions,
materials, continental breakfasts, nutrition breaks during the conference.
Registration fees have been reduced to facilitate
student participation.

Workshop registration: $150.00

Student registration: $75.00

Information about accommodation at the Donald Gordon Centre or at the
Queens University residences will be forwarded with acknowledgement of
registration.
