4.5351; Duty Station: Brasilia, Brazil; Tenure: Two years, first year
probationary period; Divison/Program/Office: Division of Disease Prevention
and Control (HCP) Communicable Diseases Program (HCT)

Basic Salary: $48,019 at single rate; $51,597 with primary dependents (per
annum net of taxes). Post Adjustment: $29,868 at single rate; $32,093 with
primary dependents (per annum net of taxes). Hardship/Mobility: $2,145 at
single rate; $2,860 (per annum net of taxes).

Minimum Requirements:
Education: A bachelor's and a master's degree in a combination of two of
the following fields: sanitary engineering, environmental engineering,
environmental sciences (biology or ecology) or public health. A Doctorate
degree in one of the health, sanitary engineering or environmental sciences
would be an asset.
Experience at national level: Seven years of experience with progressively
greater responsibilities in the areas of public health, environmental
health and/or urban sanitary engineering and in the direction and
management of activities in communicable diseases control through pest and
vector control in urban areas.
Experience at international level: Two years of participation in technical
cooperation programs and activities involving the development of disease
prevention and control programs through environmental sanitation in urban
and periurban areas.
Languages: Very good knowledge of Portuguese and/or Spanish, with a working
knowledge of English.

Health Canada's LCDC wins PAHO Director Award
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Laboratory Centre For Disease Control (LCDC) at Health Canada recently
received the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Director Award on
World Health Day (April 7). The award recognizes LCDC's role in
strengthening the capacity for surveillance of emerging and
re-emerging diseases in the Americas. Dr. Felix Li, the Acting Director
General of LCDC, accepted the award of behalf of the LCDC.

LCDC has cooperated with PAHO on many projects in response to the global
crisis posed by emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, including
AIDS, tuberculosis and diarrheal diseases. LCDC published the Lac Tremblant
Declaration, established a global medical intelligence capacity, and
collaborated with the PAHO/CIDA SIREVA (Regional Vaccine System) Project to
identify the most common strains of Strep pneumonia in children in order to
develop a better pneumonia vaccine. LCDC also collaborated with PAHO and
CIDA in developing the Regional Strategic Plan to monitor antibiotic
resistance among selected pathogens. In November 1996, LCDC hosted the
first meeting of PAHO's Regional Task Force on Emerging and Re-emerging
Diseases. LCDC has also been designated the executing agency for a
CIDA-funded regional effort to strengthen tuberculosis control, beginning
in Peru and Ecuador. This project is being developed in close collaboration
with PAHO.

Programme for women health professionals requires executive director
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Development of Women Health Professionals (DWHP) programme is seeking
an executive director. Funded by the Canadian International Development
Agency (CIDA), the DWHP program is a partnership venture between McMaster
University and the Aga Khan University (AKU) in Karachi, Pakistan. The goal
of the program is the development of nurses and women health visitors in
Pakistan, and the further development of educational and service programmes
responsive to the health needs of Pakistan.

Requirements: master's degree in nursing or related field, Ph.D. preferred;
background in nursing; demonstrated interpersonal skills; lobbying/advocacy
skills in the health field, especially nursing; demonstrated administrative
experience managing complex projects; relevant field experience in a
developing country desirable. Location: Pakistan. Tenure: Contract. In

Catholic University of Chile seeks visiting professor
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Catholic University of Chile is searching for a visiting professor to
teach at the undergraduate level from August - November 1997. The visiting
professor would teach in one or several of the following areas: nursing
models, nursing management and leadership, or health promotion. The
visiting professor would also be responsible for helping to develop
strategies to promote problem solving and critical thinking capacities in
students. The university is interested in working with the visiting
professor to foster collaborative research and to develop continuing
education activities. The university will pay the airfare and a stipend of
U.S. $3000 per month. Requirements: Education: a PhD. Language: Spanish is

Asian Development Bank requires consultants
---------------------------------------------------------------------The
Asian Development Bank is seeking 2 long-term consultants to assist with
the appraisal of an Urban PHC project. The first consultant would assist in
strengthening the capacity of the city corporations to be financed by the
Bank using grant funds. The second consultant would assist on contracting
out of health services and hiring using loan proceeds. Location:

Call for participants and volunteers for Annual Partnership Walk -
May 25, 1997

The Partnership Walk, an initiative of the Aga Khan Foundation Canada
(AKFC), will be held in 11 major cities across Canada on Sunday,
May 25 at 11:00 a.m. The walk is the largest event in support of
international cooperation. This year's theme is Water for Life. Funds
raised by the walk are matched by the Canadian International Development
Agency (CIDA) and go directly to support health, education and rural
